K: After seeing your exhibition, I can feel that you have a very strong painting ability. You majored in design in university, right? Then how did you build your basic painting skills?

G: The period of training was the most painful time for me to draw from childhood to adulthood. I didn't do anything every day, just buried myself in drawing, and didn't have time to think about why I had to draw like the teacher said. So after college, I started to try to abandon all the exam techniques and started with the simplest flat painting, adding various techniques while painting according to the needs of the picture, more like a process of demolishing and rebuilding.

K: The 30 works in the exhibition depict 30 different scenes, all pointing to the same emotion and mood. The entire exhibition shows strong creativity. Where do you usually get inspiration for creating a work?

G: Most of my inspirations come from moments when I daydream and let my mind wander freely.

White Flight

2023

Colored pencil on paper

16.5 × 17 cm

K: All your works are presented in the form of colored sketches. Why did you choose colored pencils as the painting material?

G: In colored pencil drawing, each surface is composed of individual lines, and layers of different colors are superimposed on top of each other. The gaps between the lines on each surface reveal the color of the layer beneath. The colored lines interweave and entwine, creating a light and transparent effect.

K: There is a large-scale artwork called 'Staring' in the exhibition, which measures 100x70cm. This should be a new attempt in your creative process. Can you talk about your feelings about large-scale creation?

G: The most intuitive feeling of large-scale creation is: large. Drawing with colored lead on a large scale of paper is like sewing cross stitch, which tests one's control on a larger scale.
