Zhao Bo's work is influenced by ancient Chinese paintings, especially the landscape paintings of the Northern Song Dynasty, removing the self from real life and placing it in the midst of vast natural landscapes. He is fascinated by the tension between the physical and spiritual dimensions of the small human being and the vastness of nature. As a result, Zhao Bo often draws his figures in silhouette, juxtaposing elements from various sources in unexpected ways to create a virtual landscape, allowing the viewer to re-examine the contemporary society in which he lives.

This work, An Era – Lonesome Boat, created in 2020, is based on this idea. The long-distance composition draws on the three distant method of ancient Chinese painting. The prototype of the snow forest is taken from the winter forest next to the artist's studio, but with cursive strokes favouring imaginative expression, that is the fusion of living landscape and spiritual field. The pyramid serves as a symbol of a vast social system that affects people's daily lives. An industrially produced kayak, with its flattened shape and design, pierces the imagination of ancient paintings of the boat. The kayak rests on the still river, its occupants holding paddles and gazing wordlessly in the direction of the seemingly accessible but perhaps inaccessible pyramids…

In Search of Lost Time No.5, 布面油画 Oil on canvas

250 x 150 cm  2019-2020

In Search of Lost Time,is inspired by Song Huizong's Auspicious Cranes which collected in the Liaoning Provincial Museum. In this work, birds of prey of all shapes and sizes soar through the air, creating a rhythm. Indoor swimming pool that exist in modern urban landscapes is abruptly placed in the midst of nature. Penguins from Antarctica either stand on man-made yellow kayaks or swim and weave around the pool on their own, creating a magical landscape of time and space. Not far from the pool, hidden behind the dense forest, are pyramids that seem to characterise the cultural system that envelops this fantastic landscape. The whole picture eliminates the traces of man, presenting and gazing at the contemporary landscape of life created by human beings in a wilderness-orientated way.
